THE 42 PISCINE
Often eagerly awaited, sometimes dreaded, but always memorable: 42's Piscine is a month of selection to change a whole life.
WHAT IS THE PISCINE?
A TRULY UNIQUE MONTH
The highlight of the selection process at 42 is its Piscine.
It’s the opposite of a competition: the goal is to put candidates in a real-life situation by having them start the training program. No prior coding experience is required: regardless of the starting level, 42 aims to challenge candidates on their ability to give their best during the Piscine. Instead of offering an introductory computer science course, 42’s Piscine allows candidates to start the curriculum with intensive learning of the first language used in the program, which is C. In one month, 42’s Piscine introduces candidates to all the learning methods of the program: peer-to-peer learning, group work, peer evaluations, and project-based pedagogy.

MODULES
FOR LEARNING
The exercises in 42’s Piscine are grouped into modules. It takes about a day to validate one, but you can take your time and even restart them as many times as you like. These modules allow you to focus on a particular concept. Instead of having to take a course and then dive into coding, these modules enable you to learn through practical experience.
EVALUATIONS
BY THEIR PEERS
In addition to automated grading, all modules must be reviewed by other candidates in the Piscine: this is called peer evaluation. This unique opportunity allows you to discover different ways of programming and engage in discussions about topic challenges. Even if the individuals being reviewed and the reviewers are not at the same level, everyone comes out with new knowledge: peer evaluations are the moments where you learn the most.
RUSHES
TO WORK IN GROUPS
On weekends, mandatory working groups called “rushes” allow you to collaborate with others on a project, pushing you to find a unique solution to a given problem. Rushes are evaluated by the educational team at 42 or by advanced students participating in educational activities. The feedback provided during face-to-face correction sessions gives you precise insights into your coding approach.
EXAM MACHINES
TO TEST ONESELF
Once a week, a machine exam is offered. This time, it involves assessing your skills by solving progressively challenging exercises within a limited timeframe. No assistance or support is allowed during these exams. It’s an opportunity to gauge your progress up to that point and even surpass yourself; it’s often possible to find solutions to problems that were previously thought to be impossible to achieve.
MOMENTS
OF CONVIVIALITY
42’s Piscine is not just about work: regular activities are organized to help you make new acquaintances and maintain valuable social connections. No one knows each other when they arrive, but very quickly, study groups turn into groups of friends. To add a bit of competition, candidates are randomly assigned to a Piscine coalition to participate in a friendly tournament.
AND SURPRISES...
Every day is different during the month of the 42 Piscine. The intense pace pushes you to exceed your limits every day. Do you want to spend a month discovering yourself and learning programming through hands-on practice? 42’s Piscine is here to help curious minds thrive!
